Size isn't everything... But if you want your social media pictures to have the desired impact, it's kind of important.
Here is your quick guide to the image sizes you'll need to use for each of the main platforms.
Let's run through the sizes for the main platforms in terms of posting your regular content:
Image sizes - Facebook
When it comes to image sizes, Facebook probably has the most variation - purely because there are so many post types.
From paid ads, stories, reels, feed posts... All with slightly different layouts.
So a bit of trial and error works, but the key sizes are:
Timeline post:
Recommended size: 1200 x 630 pixels
Minimum size: 600 x 315 pixels
Stories:
Recommended size: 1080 x 1920 pixels
[Top tip: If you're doing a carousel post, it will need to be square - 1200 x 1200]
Image sizes - Instagram
Not all that long ago, Instagram announced it was moving away from it's old square format and going full-screen portrait... Then reversed their announcement.
So as it stands, it's still square that rules the roost (but see our tip below!)
Feed post:
Recommended size: 1080 x 1080 pixels
Stories / Reels:
Recommended size: 1080 x 1920 pixels
[Top tip: If you want to take up maximum real estate on your audience's phone screen, use portrait images of 1080 x 1350.]
Image sizes - Twitter
Are images important on Twitter?... YES!
But the strange thing is that Twitter is a platform that still loves LANDSCAPE images - and if you don't get it right, your images will be cropped for the viewer.
Feed post:
Recommended size: 1600 x 900
[Top tip: You can get creative and use the cropping that Twitter does to have a 'reveal' element in your image - but it will take trial and error to get it right!]
Image sizes - LinkedIn
LinkedIn has an array of sizes - particularly for profile elements:
Company logo size: 300 x 300 pixels
Page cover image size: 1128 x 191 pixels
Life tab main image size: 1128 x 376 pixels
Life tab custom modules image size: 502 x 282 pixels
Life tab company photos image sizes: 900 x 600 pixels
Square logo: At least 60 x 60 pixels
Phew!
Rather frustratingly, they appear very different when viewed on different devices, so some compromise is to be expected.
The good news is that for News Feed posts, it is fairly flexible - images are reformated quite nicely - but the recommended sizes are:
Feed post:
Recommended size: 1200 x 628
[Top tip: As more and more users move to mobile on LinkedIn, the sizes are likely to change. Use trial and error and view your posts on your own mobile device to learn what works for you].
Conclusion - Is size everything?
The size of an image is not the MAIN issue when posting on any social channel - but it can dramatically impact how your post is viewed (no pun intended)...
Get it wrong, and you will lose some of the impact.
Hopefully, these recommended sizes will help you!
