The LinkedIn Algorithm is hiding your connections...

Updated: Jul 13, 2021

Has this happened to you?...

  • You seem to see content from the same people all the time?

  • You seem to see posts from days, or even weeks ago at the top of your feed?

  • You seem to NOT see content from people you used to?

You're not imagining it... It's the mysterious LinkedIn algorithm doing its thing.

But what is it? And what can you do about it?

What is LinkedIn up to?

Like all social media platforms, LinkedIn has a complex algorithm that's trying to present you with content that is more "relevant" to you. The objective is that you end up with a tailored experience that is more likely to hold your interest and keep you on the platform for longer.

The algorithm is a closely guarded secret of course - think "Colonel Sanders' secret blend of herbs and spices", but key things it looks for are:

  • Have you recently connected with someone? (you'll see their activity prioritised)

  • Have you interacted with previous content from that person?

  • Have you interacted with similar content previously?

The default position of LinkedIn is that it presents what it calls its view of "Top" items to you... The posts that the algorithm has decided you want to see (A challenge if you're doing Social Media Marketing)

Can I change that and just see everything?

Good news... YES! well, sort of...

If you're on LinkedIn on your mobile device then unfortunately you're pretty much stuck with the content that the LinkedIn algorithm wants you to see.

But - If (like approximately 50% of users) you access LinkedIn from a desktop/laptop then YOU HAVE A CHOICE!

At the top of your feed, you'll see a little drop-down that says "Sort by:". Invariably this will be set to "Top" (the Algorithm's view).

But... Just change it to "Recent" and you will see a largely unfiltered view - just based on who's posted/commented/liked content recently...

WOW!... So THAT's where all those people I'd not seen in a while have been hiding!...

Now, this may feel like a reunion but be prepared...

LinkedIn won't leave it set like that for long and you'll find that it will revert to "Top".

But now you know, you can control what you see and perhaps make contact again with those connections who had slipped off your radar.

Give it a try & let me know if it works for you!
